Atlantis Bahamas Closed Indefinitely, Reopening Cancelled

Is Atlantis Resort Open? I’m sure many of you seeking to travel to The Bahamas have been asking. For a while, the destination has been preparing to reopen. However, things have a turnaround.

The Bahamas entered Phase two of its reopening on July 1, and re-welcomed foreigners. Atlantis was then geared to open its doors the 30th.

Unfortunately, the development has caused a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases. This led to the extended closure of the megaresort.

“Atlantis Paradise Island has worked diligently to train and prepare staff with the latest health protocols as the coronavirus situation changes, but the property has not deemed it safe enough to reopen at this time,” the resort said in a statement.

For weeks, Atlantis has been teasing it’s reopening in social media. In a Facebook post, the resort promised, “paradise will always be here for you.”

Plans for gradual reopening and “new normal” protocols were previously ready for rollout. If the resort does open anytime soon, they can do so with a sound plan.

Particularly, Atlantis will first resume the operations of The Royal East and West, and the Harborside Resort.

Moreover, other landmarks in the pipeline for reopening include The Ocean Club Golf Course, The Mandara Spa, and the Atlantis Marina, along with the property’s signature casino and beach. The resort’s signature water park will be accessible with a staggered schedule.

Eighteen eateries have been preparing to serve food once again including Starbucks, Ben & Jerry’s, The Seafire Steakhouse, and Nobu by Nobu Matsuhisa.

Baha Mar Waits for October

Meanwhile, fellow luxury resort Baha Mar will not resume operations until October and will carry out additional staff cuts.

In a letter for employees, Baha Mar cited the “evolving nature” of Covid-19 as the primary reason behind the lengthy closure.

“Due to the many variables resulting from the evolving nature of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to postpone Baha Mar’s reopening,” the statement read. “It is our hope that in prolonging our closing, we are setting the stage for a more successful reopening, one that will provide the much-needed economic relief and long-term stability we all depend on.”

Furthermore, Baha Mar pledged an ex-gratia payment for up to an additional 90 days at 30 percent of employees’ base compensation, in addition to the fund workers would receive from the National Insurance Board.

Finally, the high-end resort will also be maintaining health, life and accidental death, and dismemberment insurance coverage of its workers.

Cases Spike as The Bahamas Re-open

Forty-nine new cases have been recorded since the archipelago opened its borders. This forced the Bahamas’ prime minister to announce that the country would no longer accept air and commercial-vessel arrivals from the U.S.

Travelers from the U.K., Canada, and the EU are still welcome so long as they presented proof of a negative COVID test.
